My bike is my most treasured possession (I don't count Gomez as a possession, he's my boy!), and like anything precious, you want to maintain it in pristine condition for as long as possible. This is quite a difficult thing to achieve with bikes, on one hand I want to shred the hell out of my Canyon and rip it down a trail, but on the other hand, I'm like "no, it's too nice!". Stupid brain, that's what bikes are for! I don't know about you gals and guys, but when I'm riding over loose terrain, and I hear stones getting kicked up into my frame, a little part of me dies. My poor bike. Most bikes come equipped with helicopter tape to the underside of the down tube and some other small areas around the headset, but there are companies producing really strong high quality frame guards which you can apply yourself to the areas of your bike that need it most. One of these companies is All Mountain Style (AMS).
AMS was established out of Barcelona in 2013 with the aim of producing high quality mountain bike goods with innovative designs, and their adhesive frame guards are one of those products which I have been testing out on my bike recently. The AMS honeycomb frame guard was their launch into business designed to protect your frame from scratches and impacts, and it's twin product, the fork guards, work in the same way. There are a number of different options to choose from, clear, black and camo transparent pattern, but for my forks I went with stealth black, and for my frame I decided to go clear, as I love the petrol colour as it is.
Now for the review... The guards are made from semi-ridged PVC at 380 microns which means it's strong and flexible whilst being practical for long-term outdoor usage. The frame/fork guards come neatly flat packed which eliminates any bends or kinks from transportation. The guards feel strong in the hands and the honeycomb structure gives it a nice grippy feel. Be sure to follow the installation instructions for the best results of applying the guards to your bike. It's so important to clean you frame properly and make sure all the dirt and oils are off the frame before you start, this will ensure optimal contact with the adhesive glue.
I took off my Fox decals on my forks because I wanted a more stealthy look to my bike, but you can leave your stickers on if you fancy. I found the AMS instructions super easy to follow, and the application was a total success. However, if you're a total OCD head like me, it's frustrating to try and get everything straight and symmetrical, but that's just me nit picking! It's good though because whilst your applying the guards, the glue is still soft so you can reposition the guards until you're happy. When you're satisfied with the positioning, just firmly press down all over, ensuring there are no bubbles or kinks in them. I chose to apply the guards to the areas of my bike which suffered the most, my down tube, my rear chainstay and my top tube. It's probably my bandy legs, but my right knee rubs a lot on my top tube and it's worn away the paint to the bare metal, so I attached a guard here to prevent further wear.
I'm really pleased with these frame and fork guards, I wish I had them when I first got my bike, but at least I feel that I'm now prolonging it's beauty just a wee bit longer. These products came well packaged, their easy to apply and they look really nice too. It's great that you get a set of different shapes and sizes, and if you wanted, you can cut them to shape whichever area of your bike you're concerned about. Once they're all applied and you're happy that your bike is protected, just sit back and enjoy a ride without worrying about your frame getting pebble dashed in the process. I like All Mountain Style's creative products and their passion for manufacturing innovative mountain bike parts. I'm really excited to see what else they launch in the near future, so keep an eye out because I will be!
