Let’s face it, going abroad for your mountain bike holiday can be pretty expensive. Flying with your bike, airport transfers, hotels and bike storage can all tot up to cost a pretty penny which is why it’s time for the rise of the campervan.
We’re seeing campervans and van conversions popping up all over social media as trendy and convenient ways to travel, sleep and see the world at your leisure. With airfare and exchange rates becoming increasingly more expensive, many of us are hitting the roads and adventuring further out into our own backyards, absorbing some British culture (and weather) along the way.
Now, there are three ways you can get yourself a campervan: you can buy a purpose-built camper, like the VW California, which has all the things you could need for camping but hardly accommodates the MTB lifestyle. You could buy a van and do the conversion yourself, which takes time, money and a great deal of know-how, or you can turn to van conversion specialists, like Leo SV, who have developed the ultimate MTB campervan.
Based in Whaley Bridge, Leo SV specialise in both passenger vehicles and sports utility campers by providing excellent craftsmanship and unique design experience throughout the conversion process. With over thirty years of knowledge in the industry, they’ve launched their all-new sports utility camper, the Kinder Scout.
Leo SV Kinder Scout MTB Campervan
Leo SV has a wealth of experience catering for minibuses, high-capacity wheelchair accessible vehicles and mobile outreach vehicles. So, suffice to say, they know a thing or two about vans, and how to convert them!
As the market demand for recreational campers began to rise, Leo SV saw that a new trend of buyer was emerging, that it wasn’t just families and older couples anymore, but that adventurers were jumping on board the camper wagon too. However, adventuring by any means is often accompanied by additional equipment for which traditional campers and motorhomes are unable to satisfy the need for. So Leo SV and their team set out to create something totally new that could offer comfort, security, space and luxury all in one; with four adult beds and four bikes, a well priced and robust enough vehicle for adventure, the result is the Kinder Scout.
The base vehicle for the Kinder Scout is a Fiat Ducato 35 LH2 2.3l 130bhp which comes equipped with electronic stability control, DAB radio, MP3/USB/AUX, radio controls on steering wheel, driver’s seat armrest & lumbar support & driver’s airbag. However, optional extras are available also. Working with this as the base model, Leo SV has gone to town to convert this vehicle into a mountain biker’s dream.
Inside the Kinder Scout
The team at Leo SV has really spared no expense when creating the Kinder Scout. Inside the campervan are two fold-down single beds which lie above a spacious garage area where bikes can be kept. The two belted passenger seats are Smartbeds Rock ‘n’ Roll fold-down beds measuring 6’ 4”, which is a comfortable sleeping area for four adults and their bikes.
Electricity and power outlets are well covered also with a 100wp solar panel, and regulator charger, 240v inverter 1200w, a leisure battery and control panel with a 2Kw diesel fired heater in the salon to keep you warm and toasty no matter what time of year you travel. Throughout the cabin, there are twelve USB sockets which are ideal for charging your electronic devices, along with a vertical power dock with 13amp outlets.
Both the driver and passenger seats have swivel functions allowing them to face into the salon to sit at the easy fold-away table. The kitchenette is equipped with a 50L Vitrifrigo fridge with small freezer compartment, a cold water sink, 2-ring gas hob, and both water and gas storage. Everything you could need for a hearty warm meal while on the road.
Other features include non-slip vinyl flooring, external electric outlet, LED reading lights in the sleeping areas and additional speakers in the salon. Attached to the side of the Kinder Scout is a Fiamma F65S Awning which provides sturdy shelter from the rain and ample shade in the sun making it perfect for rest days spent chilling out and, of course, barbeques!
Leo SV has installed two internal bike securing points in the rear of the Kinder Scout, allowing sufficient room for bikes, tools, kit and all the other faff that tends to come with mountain biking. However, you can choose to add another set of securing points for two more bikes as the garage area has the capacity to comfortably house up to four.
Fancy getting your hands on one of these campervans then? Of course, you do, who wouldn’t?! You will need around £48,995 though. Ok, so that’s a lot of money, but it’s not just about the miles you can cover, the savings on hotels and restaurants in the long-term, it’s the freedom and luxury to have your own wee home on the road, ready for an adventure at the drop of the hat.
What makes it even more valuable is that you have the assurance in knowing the van conversion specialists at Leo SV pride themselves on excellence so you and your bikes are in safe hands for adventures ahead. And, of course, at the end of the day, it’s still a vehicle for driving around in, getting you to and from the trails!
